Ask anyone, anywhere and anytime – ‘what’s on their mind’ and the answer you’ll get is weight loss! Since we are living in a diet-obsessed world where despite the sedentary lifestyle, everyone expects to have a perfectly toned body. Open any website on the internet or any page on social media, all you get is ways to lose weight. With so many diets, therapies, workout regimes and whatnot, there’s no dearth of ways with which people claim to lose weight. But it depends on body to body.
Ayurveda, an ancient system of medicine, was originated in India more than 5,000 years ago and is the oldest continuously practiced healthcare system in the world. It focuses on natural remedies and promotes health, balance, and longevity through simple treatments. Hence, we have Dr Kamna Mohan, an Ayurvedic physician and a diet consultant, to help us understand the role of Ayurveda in weight loss. Read on:
Can Ayurvedic treatment or therapeutic diet help in weight loss?
“Yes. Definitely! But it also depends on many other factors. To begin with the therapeutic diet, our body must have the intake of vitamin C which includes amla (gooseberry), lemon, mousambi (sweet lime), pineapple, oranges. Then we our diet must include 70% of salad, fruits, juice and 30% of cooked food excluding animal products. If you’re fat, then intake of protein should be less. Replace salt, sugar and milk in your diet. Vitamin C is best to reduce fat and more the intake of it in any form, more will be the benefits. Speaking of the Ayurveda treatment, then you can opt for massages, steam bath, udvartana treatment and basti treatment.”
What are the common mistakes that people make while aiming for weight loss? Dos and don’ts in diet if they want to lose weight.
“When we talk about taking raw food in our diet, which means we must eat fruits that are juicy. But what people do is they eat fruits like apple, mangoes and bananas which are less juicy. Instead one should have cucumber and tomato, which are juicy. Also, when people eat salads, they put salt on it. One should avoid this. Vitamin C diet helps toning the body and animal food/products are a total NO to lose weight.”
Ayurveda treatment suits everyone or they can face some side effects?
“Not really. When a patient is prescribed for a treatment, for instance, vamana which is a procedure to induce vomiting that will help eliminate the toxins in their body, we monitor the reaction. If the body reacts to it differently, then we opt for the emergency treatment to control it. But that won’t be counted as a side-effect to the treatment. It is the inner stamina of the patient to deal with the treatment. The only rule is that medicine should be taken as medicine and not food. If food is taken as medicine, then there’s no need of medicine. For example, if someone’s taking aloe vera in their diet then they continue it for years. This is wrong as aloe vera must be taken for 2-3 months and then to be continued after a gap.”
What are the treatments one can opt for if someone wants to lose weight?
“Firstly, if you follow a raw or uncooked diet, then you can lose weight. Secondly, amla in any form, not murabba, but fresh amla or powder. Thirdly, full body workout.”
