Age is just a number

My God! What will power & attitude this dadi maa has!

Wandering through Mumbai’s gallis is an adventure. You never know what you will see or what you will find. There are some days, you rue stepping out of your home while other days, leave a lasting impression. On one of these walks, I bumped into a very interesting old woman ‘Savitri Ben Kaushik’. As I spoke to her and heard her story, all I could think was ‘Wow! What will power and attitude. I hope when I am a 61-year-old dadi maa, I will be equally awe-inspiring’.

Savitri Ben Kaushik, age 61

Savitri Ben Kaushik entered the business world much later than normal. She wasn’t an eager, enthusiastic college graduate or a 40-year-old seeking a career change. She was a wife, a mother, and a grandmother looking to preserve her husband’s legacy, a travel business after he had passed away.

When Savitri’s husband had a heart attack and died, her son wanted her to sell the business and move to Dubai where he and his wife and kids were settled. Savitri refused, she felt responsible for her husband’s business and wanted to see it grow and prosper as long as she was alive. Her son argued but she held firm until he conceded to her wishes.

So, at age 59, she entered into the business world without any experience. With the aid of her employees, she began learning about the travel industry and the basics of operating a business. They even taught her how to operate a laptop. With great determination and will power, in just a year, she went from a business novice to managing the travel business. She created a warm and friendly work environment, adjusted business practices, and developed the business. In just two years, she bought the office space that her husband used to rent.

Savitri Ben Kaushik may have been a late starter in the business world but she has become a successful entrepreneur.

I’ve always believed age is in the mind and Savitri Ben Kaushik proves it.

Whether you are 20, 40 or 60, it is never too late to truly live or achieve your dream. Life is a joy ride. Challenge yourself and live it like never before.

Ye Umar nahi hoti jhurriyoon se bayan

Ye umar nahi hoti baalon ki safedi se bayaan

Ye hoti nahi kisi aur ke sochne ya kehe se bayaan

Bees saal idhar ya udhar to kisi ke bhi hote hain

Ye to sirf hoti hai andazoon se bayan

Jitney zindadil andaaz honge, utne hi furteele janaab aap honge

Stay young, stay healthy, live to the fullest; in this journey we call LIFE!

Age is just a number! Dreams can be fulfilled at any age. Couldn’t agree more. Well written.
